Theme: We're Going Through Changes

Curator: Arielle & Maya -- The EarBuds Team

Why This Theme?: EarBuds is going through lots of changes. In the last few months, we hired our first Newsletter & Podcast Coordinator -- s/o to Maya Rubin -- we revamped our podcast, (second second is out TODAY), aaaand, we rebranded. You can probably tell from the look of this email. Shoutout to our designer, Kayla Shafkowitz! This theme is dedicated to change.

The episodes we chose each focus on changes that we all go through, whether they're psychological, physical, geographical, or anything else.

Reparations for Aunt Jemima!

When Quaker decided to take Aunt Jemima off the red pancake box after 131 years, did it also try to scrub the legacy she represents? And what sort of compensation is appropriate -- and to whom -- from a band that maintained that image in public for so long?

Dr. Davidson and the Gay Cure

This is one of the rarest stories of all: a man who publicly experiences a profound change of heart. This is a profile of one of the gods of psychotherapy, who through a reckoning with his own work (oddly enough in the pages of Playboy magazine), becomes the first domino to fall in science's ultimate disowning of the "gay cure."

On the Rebrand

We’ve got a new look! It’s bittersweet to retire our first-ever EarBuds logo, which was designed by Deonica Davis back in 2017 (you can view it here). When I realized we were coming up on four years of the EarBuds newsletter, I wanted to make a change. Changing our look very clearly lets people know that even after four years, we are still innovating.

I wasn’t sure what I wanted EarBuds to look like, what vibe I wanted it to give off, the tone I wanted it to set, so I knew I’d need help with the brainstorming process. Thankfully, Maya, our newsletter and podcast coordinator, has a great sense of branding. She’s been working on a number of social media-related projects and came to this one with a lot of fun ideas. We worked with Kayla Shafkowitz, a recent college grad who studied graphic design, to ideate, create, edit, and ultimately decide upon our logo. She was unbelievably patient with me throughout this process. We shared some of our inspo with her and she took it and ran. She crushed it.

We went with purple for a number of reasons: 1. we feel like it’s a color that evokes strength. 2. Kamala Harris wore a purple jacket at the Inauguration. She actually wore a purple jacket this exact shade. We know because we used a color dropper to get the RGB code. 3. We feel that while this shade is neutral, it’s also decidedly positive.

We decided to portray the headphones crossing over one another to show that podcasting is a very collaborative medium. The sprinkles at the top are for funzies but also evoke a crown because content is queen.

Podcast Spotlight

Last Day tackles important conversations surrounding mental health and suicide. In this show, Stephanie and her team shed light on topics our society tries to push aside and avoid. What I appreciate most about Last Day is that they are working closely with The Jed Foundation to ensure they are telling this story in an intentional way, instead of sensationalizing them as the media often does. Stephanie goes a step further by dissecting each person's story, providing context to what led to the pivotal moments, and what happens after.
