Why did you choose this theme?

One of my favorite things about listening to podcasts (and stories in general) is that they give us the opportunity to meet people and go to places with them we wouldn’t have gotten to otherwise. I love peeking into other people’s worlds. As a woman, stories about other women stick with me.

The Moth is an organization that hosts live storytelling events worldwide, and it also has a podcast. This week, EarBuds is celebrating The Moth's 25th anniversary with this list!🎉

The Fugitive

Chenjerai Kumanyika, a board member and core part of the community at The Moth, is the co-host of this brilliant series, which everyone should listen to from start to finish. This episode is a riveting story about a brave woman, Ona Judge, who escaped slavery and imprisonment by none other than George Washington.

Sweet Bobby
Sliding Doors

When Kirat Assi was 29 years old, she fell in love with a cardiologist named Bobby. At least, that's what she thought. In truth, Bobby catfished her over a decade. This series explores who "Bobby" really was and why they did what they did. It is a story that holds Kirat’s open heart and and heartbreak at the center.

Snap Judgment
The Bone Reader

“Snap Judgment” bills itself as "Storytelling, with a BEAT" and the team creates riveting story soundscapes. This episode is about the discovery of a women’s severed head and the efforts of forensic rock stars to solve the mystery behind it. The ending is like some of EarBuds curator Kate Tellers's favorite stories — both finished and unfinished, which she thinks is often the truest form of finale.

The Just Enough Family
Perestroika

Host Ariel Levy follows the meteoric rise and fall of the Steinberg family, once one of America's richest families. It takes us behind the scenes through the eyes of the maternity fashion entrepreneur Liz Lange. As niece of the infamous corporate raider Saul Steinberg, Lange was eyewitness to the family's glamour and eventual downfall. Her firsthand experience takes us on a ride.

The Moth
The Moth Radio Hour: Remembering Our Loved Ones Through Story

Hosted by The Moth's longtime artistic director Catherine Burns, this episode includes stories from author Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love) and the late comedian Mike DeStefano, who introduce us to loved ones who have passed away. It’s a funny, gritty episode — and it includes a tiny visit from EarBuds curator Kate Tellers's mom. All of the women in this episode are unforgettable.
