In Loving Memory: Podcast Recommendations
Curator
Pam Uzzell (she/her), host of Art Heals All Wounds
Why did you choose this theme?
These podcasts focus on missing and unidentified murdered women and girls. Society, law enforcement, and media have written off many of these missing women and girls, due to bias around race, class, documentation status, or behaviors. These are lives whose stories are cut short for the people who love them and are searching for answers. All of the episodes in this curation are about these missing women and girls and the people who continue to search for answers and ensure that we don’t forget.

Aimée Baker, Writer and Vanessa Cicarelli and Jason Greer, Filmmakers: Honoring America’s Missing and Unidentified Women
Aimée Baker spent eight years writing her award-winning book, Doe, a poetic labor of love to memorialize women who were murdered and remain unidentified and those that go missing and are never found. Vanessa Cicarelli read Doe and she and her husband/filmmaking partner, Jason Greer, made the documentary film She to highlight Aimée’s work. One of the roadblocks that Aimée found was the racial and class bias in law enforcement and media that determines whose murders are vigorously investigated or covered in the news. Vanessa remarked particularly that girls who engaged in behavior termed “risky” were automatically written off as runaways.
Forgotten: Women of Juarez
A Cross-Border Killer?
In this episode we learn of Diana Washington Valdez, a journalist tirelessly investigating the murders of women in Ciudad Juarez in northern Mexico. This episode presents the excruciating pain of one family, recent newcomers to Juarez, who came to work in the maquiladoras (foreign-run factories) and lost a daughter to violence. Her name was Sagrario González Flores and her murder remains unsolved.
Black Girl Gone: A True Crime Podcast
MISSING: The Disappearance of Dannette and Jeannette Millbrook
This is the case of two young Black twin girls, Dannette and Jeannette Millbrook, who went missing in 1990. Even though they were only 15 years old, the police refused to take them down as missing persons for 24 hours and then promptly decided that the girls must have run away. Dannette and Jeannette’s mother and sister have continued to bring attention to their case, but have repeatedly run into a nightmarish mishandling of the case from law enforcement and other organizations.
We are Resilient: An MMIW True Crime Podcast

This episode involves a young girl, Anthonette Cayedito, who remains missing. In this heartbreaking episode, the three hosts, Ali-sha, Sheyashe, and Maggie, discuss the lax investigation and missed opportunities by law enforcement.

Border Trilogy Part 3: What Remains
This episode details the discovery of the remains of Maricela, a migrant woman from Ecuador, in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. This story of the effort by Jason De Leon, the anthropologist who found her, to discover her identity allows him to build a story around her life and the path that led to her tragic death in the desert. It also gives Maricela’s family some kind of closure. It’s an incredibly personalized way to examine the human cost of the Prevention by Deterrence immigration policy at the U.S. Southern Border.
